The ISO/TS 16949:2009 standard was developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), which was formed by a group of major automotive manufacturers including BMW Group and Chrysler Group.

It is actually based on ISO 9001:2008 but has a number of additional requirements, including stricter requirements for control of documents, training and production requirements.
